All About Vaginal Discharges

It is entirely normal to have some vaginal discharge and the amount changes during your menstrual cycle. Different women have different amounts of vaginal discharge which is also normal.

When to start worrying

If your vaginal discharge becomes different from normal – thick, smelly, changes colour or is itchy – then something is wrong and you need to do something about it. If you have not had sex it is most likely that you have thrush, though sometimes it may be because you have left a tampon in, or developed and allergy to soap or something. But if you are having sex then may still be thrush, or it may be that you have a sexually transmitted nasty such as chlamydia, trichomonas, gonorrhoea etc and you MUST get it checked out by a doctor – either your GP, young person’s clinic or GUM clinic (Genito-urinary medicine clinic).
